Shambhu Moktan:I fell in love with photography
when I was fourteen years old. My elder brother, Suresh Moktan, handed
me Nikon FM10 and showed me how to load films and take pictures. He
demonstrated that a camera could capture the moments of life into a
lifeless two dimensional paper. Ever since I have always loved
photography. After completing my high school I joined the British
Gurkhas Army. I had a chance to attend the “College of Military
Training and Education Centre”, Beaconsfield, London where I studied
Photography, Vidoegraphy and Editing. I purchased my first video camera
Sony TR7 and started making some home videos. My friends liked my
videos and encouraged me to shoot at local parties. Soon in no time I
was video shooting at major parties (Dashain, Tihar, Parades) and
events.
Serving the military for 12 years, I moved to United States of America
in 2002. Since I was new to the country I worked in an Indian
restaurant as a waiter. When the restaurant manager found out that I
was a videographer he requested me to video shoot his friend’s wedding.
He was impressed with my work and asked me to shoot some local parties.
I worked as a major videographer for the Indian and the Guyanese
community in Long Island, NY.
events.
My journey as a videographer also lead me to shoot music videos of
Nepalese singers. many conventions (ANA), meetings of Nepalese
ministers, and other diplomatic personnel.
Camera is such an erotic instrument and I take pleasure in using it.
But, I find more gratification whenever I see that pleased look in my
clients’ face after showing my work to them. And this is the philosophy
of my work.
